The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

I researched the “ 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.

The book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is written by Stephen R. Covey.

The 7 habits mentioned in the book are:

Habit 1: Be Proactive

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

Habit 3: Put First Thing First

Habit 4: Think Win/Win

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

Habit 6: Synergize

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

I want to discuss about Habit 1, 3, and 5 and how it is in alignment with my personality.

Habit 1: Be Proactive

I always prepare to avoid possible problems in the future instead of trying to tackle it when it happens. I try to make several plans for all possible outcomes so that I do not panic and waste time when a problem actually arises.

Habit 3: Put First Thing First

I keep a monthly and weekly planner so that I can plan ahead of time. I prioritize my work and schedule my time so that I do the important things first. I can manage my time very well by writing down due dates and meeting times in my planner.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

I like to listen to others more than speaking. I strongly believe that if I want others to understand my views and opinions, I have to first listen to what they believe. I think that interpersonal skills are connected to habit 5.

I am currently taking international business courses. In my educational career, I make a yearly plan to outline the important dates. Using the yearly plan, I make a short-term plan for one semester to make sure I know the dates for all the class dates, assignment due dates, presentation dates, as well as test dates. And with this, I will be able to cooperatively agree on dates to meet with my group members.

I can apply these habits in the workplace. I work as a Sous Chef at a Korean restaurant. I have to make sure my school work does not conflict with my work time so I need to organize dates ahead of time. Also, since I have to work in the kitchen with many staff, we have to respect and understand each other in order to avoid conflicts while working.

With my personality as a basis, I am able to effectively apply these 3 habits to my school life and the workplace.
